The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth. — Maria Montessori
Pacific Crest Farm a 16-acre working farm on Vashon Island, has provided us with the opportunity to offer the full expression of Montessori Education for Life.
The Farm not only provides the ideal learning environment for the young adolescent but it is also a place for children of all levels, their families, and the community to experience the joy of both working and celebrating the land. Together we are working to preserve the Farm, develop a study center, build a sustainable model of education and engage in the full cycle of production.
As Maria Montessori wrote in From Childhood to Adolescence, “. . . the work of the soils is at the same time an introduction to nature and to civilization. The work of the soils is the approach to limitless scientific and historical studies. As for the harvest that ensures, it constitutes an initiation to the fundamental social mechanism of production and exchange, the economic base on which society rests.”
